If you have an Under Gravel filter, make sure you occasionally remove the lift tubes and siphon out the mulm that accumulates under the plate. With all filters, it's still important to remove as much mulm and other organic debris as possible. An Aquarium Vacuum is the preferred method for both water change and mulm removal; although in between water changes an Ehiem Sludge Remover Vacuum is an excellent tool to have, especially in high bio load aquariums.

There is a terrible drought of shell dwelling cichlids here! I got quite lucky because I had been searching for them for a little more than 6 months, and I had placed my email address on several waiting lists at various places so I could get first dibs on them. Never did hear anything from any of those places. Walked into the LFS where we go most times and there they sat.

I fell upon them when I was looking for hardy fish that thrive in hard water and can fit comfortably in a ten gallon. The choices were quite limited as you can imagine. I love that I won't have to tweak anything chemistry-wise in order for them to be healthy. I even found my shell source.
Just need the fish lol major plus is that I am still learning how to plant and decorate tanks, and these guys just need sand, shells and few rocks.

You're welcome! Unfortunately they are not easy at all to sex even as adults. The only way you can visually tell them apart is that the males are bigger than the females.
It's almost impossible to differentiate between the two when they're juveniles unless you pay very very close attention to their behavior with one another. Also keep in mind that, from what I've read, it takes them some time to mature 6 months or more.
If you plan on getting enough to comfortably fill a 10 gallon tank, I highly recommend Texas Holy Rock also a good buffer for a Cichlid tank to use as a sort of divider. I have two pieces that give the tank 3 sections. They seem to be comfy with it and it provides a nice block from line of site.
