How does ph affect african cichlids

Though relatively small they are more like little chips than rounded pebbles - fairly jagged and rough on the edges. Then again it may not be this at all. Any ideas? Thank you. The normal biological process of Nitrification will have the same effect as titrating with nitric acid NHO3. Carbonate hardness KH is slowly used up in this process, reducing buffering and pH. When the KH is completely depleted, you will find that the aquarium pH will stabilize around 4. In this process, KH Carbonate Hardness is deplete if not cleaned rinsed regularly.

If you have an Under Gravel filter, make sure you occasionally remove the lift tubes and siphon out the mulm that accumulates under the plate. With all filters, it's still important to remove as much mulm and other organic debris as possible. An Aquarium Vacuum is the preferred method for both water change and mulm removal; although in between water changes an Ehiem Sludge Remover Vacuum is an excellent tool to have, especially in high bio load aquariums.

One of them is for the problem you are having and the other is that GH is simple way of knowing your calcium levels in fresh water. It's also very important to fish health. I am looking at online breeders but its quite difficult to find one with mostly good reviews from customers. Would be so much easier if lfs carried them one things for sure, if I get a breeding pair- I will always have someone willing to take the fry!

There is a terrible drought of shell dwelling cichlids here! I got quite lucky because I had been searching for them for a little more than 6 months, and I had placed my email address on several waiting lists at various places so I could get first dibs on them. Never did hear anything from any of those places. Walked into the LFS where we go most times and there they sat.

Papajin was like "aren't these the fish you want? By the next weekend I had them. Quite expensive, but since they are so hard to find they pretty much knew they could put any price on them that they wanted.

These are by far the healthiest fish I've ever bought from there, too. Which shell dwellers are you after? I highly recommend the Multies as they will either pair off or the males will establish a harem the males in my tank seem to have harems These are very unique little fish in that they have one heck of a personality.

My eyes aren't so good so I will use a magnifying glass to look at them Mamajin- lucky is right! I would have bought the entire stock too! I am looking for multis, every cichlid owner highly recommends them and with the small set up I have, they are actually an ideal choice.

I fell upon them when I was looking for hardy fish that thrive in hard water and can fit comfortably in a ten gallon. The choices were quite limited as you can imagine. I love that I won't have to tweak anything chemistry-wise in order for them to be healthy. I even found my shell source.

Just need the fish lol major plus is that I am still learning how to plant and decorate tanks, and these guys just need sand, shells and few rocks.

Perfect for me mamajin- are they easy to sex as juveniles? I really don't want to have a bad ratio on my hands an ten have to hunt down more. Oh and thank you for all info you can give me about them, it is truly appreciated.

You're welcome! Unfortunately they are not easy at all to sex even as adults. The only way you can visually tell them apart is that the males are bigger than the females.

It's almost impossible to differentiate between the two when they're juveniles unless you pay very very close attention to their behavior with one another. Also keep in mind that, from what I've read, it takes them some time to mature 6 months or more.

If you plan on getting enough to comfortably fill a 10 gallon tank, I highly recommend Texas Holy Rock also a good buffer for a Cichlid tank to use as a sort of divider. I have two pieces that give the tank 3 sections. They seem to be comfy with it and it provides a nice block from line of site.

I'm still learning about them myself, but will share my knowledge where I can! Similar Aquarium Threads. Replies 6 Views The lower amount of hydrogen ions present, the more acidic the substance. The higher amount of hydrogen ions, the more basic the substance. The pH scale is a diagram that provides a visual guide for the different levels of pH. Pure water has a neutral pH, or a pH level of 7. Milk has a pH level of 6. The lower the number on the pH scale, the higher the amount of acid the substance has.

For instance, lemon juice has a pH of 2 and battery acid has a pH of 1. Levels higher than seven are more basic or alkaline. Baking soda has a pH of 9. Lye, a caustic alkaline substance that can give you a chemical burn when it touches your skin, has a pH of Strong acids and bases can dissolve into water and change the water's pH level. Rocks, chemicals, and even adding or removing fish from your fish tank can alter the level of pH in the water.

This affects other chemicals present in the water, such as the ammonia from fish waste. When the water's pH level drops and it becomes acidic, the amonia ions chemically react with the water to form harmless ammonium ions and hydroxyl ions and carbon dioxide.

Some rocks not specifically sold for fish tanks can have harmful elements in them, such as limestone, which can raise the pH in your water and make it more basic.
