According to the Quran, one of the main roles of Muhammad is to warn the unbelievers of their punishment at the end of the world. A depiction of Muhammad receiving his first revelation from the angel Gabriel.
Muslims regard the Quran as the most important miracle of Muhammad, the proof of his prophethood, and the culmination of a series of divine messages revealed by the angel Gabriel from — CE. Religious duties required of the believers at this time were few: belief in God, asking for forgiveness of sins, offering frequent prayers, assisting others, particularly those in need, rejecting cheating and the love of wealth considered to be significant in the commercial life of Mecca , being chaste, and not killing newborn girls.
Around , Muhammad began to preach to the public. Most Meccans ignored and mocked him, but he did begin to gain followers.
There were three main groups of early converts to Islam: younger brothers and sons of great merchants; people who had fallen out of the first rank in their tribe or failed to attain it; and the weak, mostly unprotected foreigners. Islam is a monotheistic and Abrahamic religion articulated by the Quran, which is considered by its adherents to be the verbatim word of God Allah , and, for the vast majority of adherents, by the teachings and normative example called the sunnah , composed of accounts called hadith of Muhammad.
An adherent of Islam is called a Muslim. Muslims believe that God is one and incomparable and that the purpose of existence is to worship God. Nearly all Muslims consider Muhammad to be the last prophet of God. Muslims also believe that Islam is the complete and universal version of a primordial faith that was revealed many times before through prophets including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.
Muslims believe the Quran to be both the unaltered and the final revelation of God. Religious concepts and practices include the Five Pillars of Islam and following Islamic law, which touches on virtually every aspect of life and society, from banking and welfare to the status of women and the environment.
The ruling elite ganged up against Muhammad and his followers, and began to persecute them. A few Meccans began to accept Muhammad's message, while other members of his clan came to support their kinsman out of family loyalty, even if they did not yet believe in his cause. Muhammad's position in Mecca became hopeless when his wife Khadija and uncle Abu Talib died in quick succession.
In the local rulers of Mecca forced Muhammad and his small band of followers to leave the city. Muhammad accepted an invitation to settle in the oasis of Yathrib, located some eleven days miles north by camel, for the oasis had been nearly torn apart by wars between the clans, of which many were Jewish. Muhammad's hegira from Mecca marks the beginning of a new polity. For the first time in Arabia members of a community were bound together not by the traditional ties of clan and tribe but by their shared belief in the one true God.
Later believers, looking back on this event, recognized its seminal importance by designating it as the first year of their new era. In further recognition of this great event, the oasis of Yathrib came to be called Medina, "the city [of the Prophet]. Muhammad, surrounded by his followers, lived in Medina for ten years, slowly winning over converts. Muhammad made repeated attempts to attract the Jews to his cause, for example, he directed that believers worship like the Jews in the direction of Jerusalem.
Ultimately these attempts failed, and henceforth Muslims prayed in the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca. When I have fashioned him and breathed into him of my spirit Sura Had the spirit been Gabriel. He would have taught Muhammad to read and write. The Qur'an declares that Allah taught Jesus how to write: "'And Allah will teach him the book and wisdom, the Torah and the gospel" Sura We would expect that Mohammed, who calls himself the seal of the prophets, would be taught to read and write.
The spirit said in his revelation to Muhammad Read: and thy lord the most Bounteous, who teaches by the pen, teacheth man that which he know not Sura The question is if God teaches man that which he know not by the pen, why did he not teach Muhammad the 'senior prophet how to read and write instead of leaving him illiterate all his life? We learn from Islamic tradition that on several occasions when Muhammad saw the spirit, he would be so frightened he would run home to his wife and ask her to cover him with clothes: "I was called again and raised my head, and there on the Throne in the open atmosphere he, i.
Gabriel peace be upon him was sitting. I began to tremble on account of fear. I came to Khadija and said: Wrap me up. They wrapped me up and threw water on me Narrated by Jabir At other times, Muhammad experienced some strange physical symptoms. From Hadith Mishkat, we learn that, sometimes he would shrive and swoon, roar like a camel and white foamy saliva would come from his mouth Hadith Mishkat iv p. Sometimes when he receive revelation s there was the sound like the buzzing of bees near his face source: Umar Ibnu'l Khattab , while at other times, he felt a tremendous headache.
Muhammad once said: "At times it comes to me like the ringing of a bell and that is most severe for me Sahih Muslim vol. However, it is unclear why Mohammed later said, " The bell is the musical instrument of Satan. According Ahmad b. Hanbal, "He became distressed, foaming at the mouth and closing his eyes. At times he snorted like a young camel Ahmad b. Hanbal I, 34, , vi. This gave rise to the allegation in certain quarters Muhammad was epileptic. Holy Prophet Muhammad according to 'Amr Ibn Sharhabil, mentioned to his wife, Khadija, that he feared he was possessed by demons and wondered whether others consider him possessed [i.
