Two years ago, as Trump was campaigning to become President, some of the media seemed to lose touch with good portion of America, primarily rural America, where people living in small communities were frustrated with the previous administration.
Trump saw, reacted to, told them what they wanted to here, and he won. At the same time, news organizations dug deep into Trump's words and actions. We are supposed to question authority, hold public officials and institutions accountable, spark dialogue and amplify the voices who might not otherwise be heard. There are no perfect solutions to any of this, except that The News-Press and its editorial board encourage people to give voice to issues.
We want to listen, learn and continue the dialogue. We want to know how we can be better in communicating messages and in community engagement. Journalism is about giving voice and connecting people by sharing the truth. Journalists do not want it any other way. Objectives: Opinions should be based on fact and respectful in tone.

It could potentially snowball into something way worse. There are several cases in which speech is not protected, however. When you have an opinion that aligns yourself to a group or faction, you run the risk of mistaking this sense of acceptance and belonging as who you are. You get reduced down to a label , when in fact you have a personality that is so much more complex and too complicated to be summarized by a single label such as feminist, hipster, fanboy, grammar nazi or housewife. You have your own set of opinions, formed by your life experiences, by the things you read, by the conversations you have, and you deserve to let that surface.
