What Not to Eat with Braces Oct 15, What Sugar Does to Teeth — When you eat sugar, your mouth ends up dealing with a minute acid attack.

Eating just a single piece of candy means that your tooth enamel is being attacked for 20 minutes by millions of bad bacteria colonies. The more sweets you indulge in, the worse the attack is on your teeth. If you indulge in too much sugar when you have braces, you could end up with a spotty surprise when they come off. Sugar results in acids in the mouth, which can cause decay. When grime builds up under your braces, it may leave white spots behind.

The increasingly acidic environment in your mouth created by eating sugar also can erode tooth enamel, making teeth more susceptible to tooth decay. Carbs and starchy foods break down into sugars, which result in the production of acid as well. It can actually undo months of hard work in your orthodontic treatment. Those who have braces should consider the following before reaching for that candy bar.

Candy contains a great deal of sugar, and this is not good for your health, regardless of wearing braces or not. Sugar, and carbohydrates in general, provide fuel for bacterial growth that damages teeth. If you do not wear clear braces that are removable for proper oral hygiene, candy can quickly become a problem. The bands, brackets and wires of metal braces are a fertile ground for decay because there so many places for sugar to hide and bacteria to start spreading.

You may also think that the type of candy makes a difference. Whether the candy is soft, hard, gooey or sticky, it is bad for your braces. For most patients, a loose band or bracket will set their treatment back one to two months. Besides cavities, all of that hard, sticky, gooey candy can hurt your teeth in other ways. Aside from the force and effort it takes to eat really sticky or hard candy that can ultimately damage your braces, imagine how your teeth feel after an archwire adjustment.

Your teeth are usually very sensitive and ache while you have braces on your teeth, especially after an archwire adjustment. Now picture yourself trying to bite into a piece of hard candy. Your teeth will scream in horror because they are so sensitive to pressure.

Enjoying a piece of candy is not worth the pain and anguish that comes with these hard-to-resist treats, but there are alternatives to candy that can help to satisfy your sweet tooth while being friendly to your teeth. It is generally okay to enjoy something sweet from time to time because let's face it, sweets are a part of life. If you find yourself craving something sweet, put down the candy and consider baking or preparing something sweet from a braces-friendly recipe book.

Once your sweet tooth has finally been put to rest, always ensure that you brush and floss immediately after consuming sugar. Sign up for our Health Tip of the Day newsletter, and receive daily tips that will help you live your healthiest life.
